"...the Greek word for 'wolf,' lukos, is so close to the word 'light', leukos,
that it has often been mistaken in translation."
- Barry Lopez, oF wOLVES AND MEN (1978)
About
LED strip lights, typically decorative, controllable and predictable, are reimagined and rewilded as artworks. They are coded to be unpredictable, ground-moving beings - conceptual red wolves, who activate the spaces between contemporary galleries.
They sprint past an overlook, peer down a staircase, and run through the hallways. Each visitor's experience with the Leukos Lukos is an uncontrolled and unique encounter.
These are not artworks that only represent animals. They are artworks that move as animals ... appearing, walking, running, stopping, circling, surrounding, and disappearing.
"The wolves here give us music every morning, from six corners at once, such music as I have never heard. They are not like the wolves of Germany, Poland, and Livonia, but are afraid of men, and do not usually approach near them."
"A couple of Brethren skilled in hunting would be of benefit not only here but at our other tracts, partly to kill the wolves and panthers, partly to supply the Brethren with game. Not only can the skins of wolves and panthers be sold, but the government pays a bounty of ten shillings for each one killed."
